Athena was originally designed and built in 1936 by Robert Arthur Bullivant as an Odeon cinema. The venue represented one of the largest, most extravagant buildings within the region comprising simply of one cinema screen seating over 3,000 guests!
It was subdivided into 4 screens in the 1960’s and remained closed throughout much of the 1990’s. In 2005 it was restored to its former glory and re opened as Athena Events Venue retaining its original art deco splendor, while introducing cutting edge facilities to serve the most demanding of event requirements to include broadcast quality sound, laser projectors, extensive lighting rig as well as dedicated WIFI connections.
A hard working and dedicated in house team of event planners, chefs and technicians will work closely with you to ensure your next event is the best yet.
We have been proud to host events for the National Dentistry Awards, National Fitness Awards, NHBC, Blue Diamond, Global Payments, Jaguar, National Trust, Tescos, Next, Jaguar, to name a few! So whether its 150 or 1500 delegates we can help you accommodate your needs comfortably.

We (Blue Light Card) held our very first offsite conference at Athena this week and from start to finish we received exceptional service and support from the whole team and we would highly recommend to other businesses looking for a wonderful venue to hire. Hira, Head of Events was super responsive, very friendly and accommodating and led a brilliant team who knew exactly what we needed to ensure our event was a success. We were able to access the premises the day before to set-up, and were well supported by everyone from the IT to the catering team. Everyone was professional, the day ran smoothly, nothing was too much trouble and the food was absolutely delicious (I highly recommend the Caribbean sticky chicken). We would absolutely book the venue again. Thank you so much from all of us at BLC!

From booking and the initial meetings we had, through to your support and the support of your staff on the day was absolutely fantastic, you are one of the most accommodating venues I have worked with especially for an event this side, you definitely made my life so much easier and less stressful so thank you so much!!
The feedback from the dancers and the guests has all been fantastic… which for that size audience usually someone has something to moan about but no everyone has said what a brilliant venue and great event it was!

In 2018 we visited several venues in the East Midlands to discuss our requirements to see whether they could support us better than the previous venue we used who let us down with their communication and service, and who made the event planning far more stressful than it needed to be.
Hira at the Athena filled us with complete confidence that they would be able to make our event bigger and better than ever before, even offering new ideas to really add life to our ceremony. We loved the look and feel of the venue which offered a party atmosphere for our celebration rather than a plain conference room.
After realising we would get all of our requirements met, the final thing was to test the food. We were so impressed with the quality and presentation of the catering that we booked in our date straight away. When you’re an event organiser for a large scale event it is imperative that you can have complete trust in a venue. To achieve this, a venue needs to provide excellent communication, great service and be able to demonstrate their experience through offering new ideas and simple solutions to problems.
Time and time again the Athena has provided me with this confidence, allowing me to relax and concentrate on my own roles.”
