For our latest 'Getting To Know' feature, we caught up with A J Hardie - Lighting designer and project manager - recently turned to freelancing after 4 years full time experience in the events industry
Q: In a nutshell, tell us the about your services and the some of the industries you’ve freelanced for?
A: My passion is lighting design but the bulk of my work is as a technical director and technical project manager. I work client side, agency side and with suppliers mainly for corporate and experiential but also private parties and live music.
Q: How did you get started in the events industry?
A: I was looking to get out of theatre and ended up in contact with Event Concept who took a chance on me and luckily for both of us I panned out!
Q: Most memorable moment working as a freelancer?
A: Delivering a conference in Ethiopia. Such an amazing country and such great people but definitely a challenging place to work.
Q: Best location you’ve worked at?
A: I always love working in Barcelona. It’s my favourite city in the world. I always come back quite a bit heavier than when I arrived…
Q: If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself when you first started out in the events world?
A: Always make sure you can see the bigger picture during a project; a good gig is when everything comes together and it’s not just about the lights!
