For our latest 'Getting To Know' feature, we caught up with Zoe Perkins - freelance event manager, living in London and working globally. Going by the company name Vodka on Toast, which usually makes people laugh. With 13 years of international events experience, Zoe has worked on most kinds of events, specialising in corporate events – conferences, awards, incentives, and Christmas parties – you name it!.
Q: In a nutshell, tell us the about your services and the some of the industries you’ve freelanced for?
A. I offer impeccable end-to-end event management services to agencies in need of an extra pair of hands. I also work with businesses directly, when they need to bring in an event manager for a specific project. I’ve worked in corporate, PR, charity and academic sectors primarily and want to experience all of them!
Q: How did you get started in the events industry?
A: At school, I was always the one organising events - theatre productions, the Leavers’ Ball, choir tours – I did it all. Events are my one true professional love and I can’t imagine doing anything else with the same passion and commitment.
Q: Most memorable moment working as a freelancer?
A: Winning my first client! The day my first client confirmed their decision to book me to manage their event is a day I’ll never forget. Having taken a very scary leap into freelance life after working in-house for many years, it was a validating moment and I knew I was on the right path.
Q: Best location you’ve worked at?
A: It’s so hard to choose just one, but I’d say for immaculate service, amazing food and stunning landscapes, Morocco is a fantastic place for events. Staying at the Four Seasons Resort Marrakesh is a pretty exceptional experience I’d say.
Q: If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself when you first started out in the events world?
A: Time flies when you’re having fun - don’t stand still for too long | Ask questions | Try everything | Fail up | Do what you can to bring others up with you | Be hungry to learn |
