40 years ago (September 15), the golfing world watched as Sam Torrence stepped up to the 18th hole on The Belfry’s iconic Brabazon course and made his now legendary putt to secure victory for Europe in the 1985 Ryder Cup.
The first time the renowned sporting event had been held at The Belfry Hotel & Resort, and the first time Europe had won it, the now world-class golfing destination is celebrating this milestone by holding its one-, two- and three-round golf breaks at 2025 prices until 31st October.
In the first event of its kind, The Belfry recently welcomed four icons from that award-winning team back to its greens for a special 40th anniversary match to mark the start of the British Masters. Sir Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Sandy Lyle and Sam Torrance once again took to the Brabazon in a fourball that saw Faldo and Woosnam claim victory over Lyle and Torrance.
Having gone on to host the Ryder Cup for a world record-breaking four times, and as host of next year’s 2026 British Masters for an incredible fifth consecutive year, The Belfry is one of the UK’s leading golf resorts. Its world-famous Brabazon course has challenged some of the sport’s greatest players, including Seve Ballesteros, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and many more, and witnessed some of its most dramatic moments.

“You really are walking in the footsteps of legends here and, whether a beginner or pro, we take great pride in making sure everyone who tees off on one of our three championship courses enjoys a tournament-like experience. Four decades on from that unforgettable first event, we’ve been thrilled that our passion, professionalism and expertise have built our reputation as one of the UK’s most celebrated golfing destinations - we would be delighted to welcome the Ryder Cup back to the greens where, as so many times before, golfing history has been made.”
Chris Reeve, Director of Golf, The Belfry Hotel & Resort
Investing significantly in its courses – which also include the acclaimed PGA National and The Derby – The Belfry has put turf quality, irrigation and sustainability at the forefront of its greenkeeping efforts. Its courses are GEO certified, the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf, and are one of the few courses to offer year-round premium conditions, with uninterrupted play continuing on full greens even throughout the winter months.
The independent resort, which recently raised over £100,000 for charity with its first-ever Belfry Classic Golf Day, also offers state-of-the-art facilities including a Top Tracer Driving Range, Golf Shop, tailored custom fitting suites with brands such as Callaway, Ping, Taylormade and Titleist, and the PGA National Golf Academy.
Located in the Midlands, The Belfry is renowned for its world-class facilities, vibrant atmosphere and heartfelt hospitality. Alongside its three golf courses, it is home to over 450 luxurious bedrooms and suites, a brand new fitness and wellness centre and several award-winning restaurants and bars. This is as well as the Belfry Spa with its famous Fire & Ice Experience, a state-of-the-art new events venue and an exhilarating adventure playground for families.
