For our latest SUPPLIER FOCUS feature, we caught up with Michelle Wildman - Director of Sales of the fab Mercure Sheffield St Paul's Hotel & Spa to find out all about her and this fab hotel!
Q. In a nutshell, tell us about your business and your role there
A. I am so lucky to work for the rather splendid Mercure Sheffield St Paul’s Hotel & Spa – I love my job albeit made easy as I get to sell a venue which does a great job of selling itself! My role is as Director of Sales and I get to spread the word about our beautiful hotel which is only a 5 minute walk from the station (you can get to Sheffield from London in just 2 hours!) in the heart of the city.
Q. How did you get started in the industry?
A. I always wanted to embark on a career in sales and following my degree in Marketing at the University of Surrey (no sales degree available!), I worked as a coffee sales rep covering West London/M3/M4 corridor. I proactively sold my coffee and machines to a large hotel and loved the atmosphere and wondered there was a job where I could sell a hotel… Well, it turned out I could, and 16 years later here I still am! I do love the industry and combining my 2 passions.
Q. Best moment for you at your company so far?
A. We hosted the Accor 2019 Commercial Forum at the hotel and did we WOW the senior Accor team or what!? Words cannot express how so, so immensely proud of the hotel and our excellent team. We had countless extremily positive comments and it was most certainly an event to remember for many years, and a great platform to showcase how we deliver events!
Q. How can your organisation’s services make a Delegate Wrangler’s life easier?
A. Where do I start!? Mercure Sheffield St Paul’s Hotel & Spa is a venue that gives any event the ‘wow’ factor. Our spacious, self-contained City Suite can hold up to 550 delegates theatre style and 250 cabaret. The suite has a wonderful private pre-function area ideal for refreshments or exhibition space. We have some real expertise in our business on event delivery and we can allow any Delegate Wrangler to breathe, relax and know their event will be in great hands and run like a dream from enquiry to exit. Having 169 beautiful bedrooms with the best views in the city also makes us ideal for a residential conference. There is so much to do on our doorstep and great venues we work with for something a bit different.
Q. And finally - you’ve got one question to ask a famous person – who would it be and what would you ask?
A. I am absolutely amazed and equally fascinated by the feat of Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953 of being the first to reach the summit of Everest with such heavy equipment (no way near as light as today!). He famously quoted that ‘It’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves’ I would ask him how he stayed so focussed and motivated to reach the summit under such difficult circumstances and to achieve what had killed many explorers before him.
