One of Britain’s most significant maritime heritage buildings has reopened following a £3.8 million restoration, unveiling one of Kent's most distinctive new venues for weddings, private celebrations and corporate events.
The Commissioner’s House at The Historic Dockyard Chatham, built in 1704 for the Commissioner of the Royal Dockyard, is the oldest surviving naval residence of its kind in Britain. Following an extensive 18-month restoration, the Grade I listed mansion has been beautifully restored, preserving its Georgian elegance and remarkable craftsmanship to create a stunning venue for memorable events for every occasion.
For more than three centuries, the house has welcomed admirals, dignitaries and distinguished guests, hosting countless celebrations within its walls. Today, it begins a new chapter, inviting guests to create their own stories in the most magnificent heritage setting.
Completing the transformation is the addition of a striking new Orangery, a light-filled, contemporary space set within the stunning Commissioner’s House gardens. Connected seamlessly to the expansive private terrace, it provides an exquisite backdrop for weddings, receptions, gala dinners and outdoor entertaining, enhancing the flow of the venue and increasing overall event capacity to 200 guests.
"The restoration of The Commissioner's House has been about far more than preserving an important historic building. For more than 300 years, this remarkable house has welcomed people through its doors to celebrate, entertain and mark life's most important moments. Our ambition has been to give it a vibrant new future, welcoming guests to enjoy their own special occasions and private events within its beautifully restored walls. We are proud to have secured the future of this extraordinary house and see it begin its next chapter as one of Kent's most distinctive event venues, ensuring it will continue creating new memories for generations to come."
