Jack Marczewski, Portfolio Events Director at The Meetings Show, shares his insights on how embracing diverse generational perspectives can enhance creativity, improve attendee experiences, and future-proof the industry.

Innovation thrives when diverse perspectives come together, and in the events industry, one of the most valuable yet sometimes overlooked sources of diversity is generational. From seasoned professionals with decades of experience to digital-first young talent entering the industry, the interplay of ideas, approaches, and working styles can lead to truly groundbreaking results.

However, fostering meaningful collaboration between different generations is not without its challenges. Communication styles, expectations, and even approaches to technology can vary widely. But rather than seeing these differences as barriers, we should view them as opportunities, opportunities to create more inclusive, dynamic, and forward-thinking events that reflect the diverse audiences we serve.

One of the most effective ways to encourage cross-generational collaboration is to create structured but informal opportunities for interaction. At The Meetings Show, we have seen first-hand how informal discussions, reverse mentoring schemes, and dedicated networking sessions can encourage real dialogue and knowledge exchange between different age groups. Another key strategy is to adopt a culture of openness and active listening. Senior professionals should be encouraged to share their wealth of knowledge, but equally, younger team members should feel empowered to introduce fresh perspectives. Encouraging a two-way exchange rather than a top-down approach ensures that teams are constantly learning and evolving.

Each generation brings something unique to the table. Baby Boomers and Gen X often have deep industry knowledge, strong interpersonal skills, and a strategic long-term view. Meanwhile, Millennials and Gen Z tend to excel at digital literacy, adaptability, and new ways of engaging audiences, especially through technology and social media.

In today’s fast-evolving, AI-powered landscape, multi-generational collaboration is more vital than ever. While esteemed professionals bring deep industry knowledge, strategic foresight, and strong relationship skills, younger team members often lead the way in digital fluency, adaptability, and tech-driven engagement. The smartest event strategies harness the best of both — blending experience with innovation. By empowering each generation to lead where their strengths lie, from shaping long-term vision to driving AI adoption and virtual engagement, organisers can create events that are not only relevant but truly future-ready.

Personally, I have found immense value in listening to insights from professionals at every stage of their careers. One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned came from a younger colleague who introduced me to a new way of structuring virtual and hybrid event experiences. Their perspective challenged traditional approaches and ultimately led to a more engaging and accessible format for attendees. On the other hand, I have also benefited greatly from the mentorship of industry veterans who have shared strategies for long-term relationship building and crisis management, skills that no amount of AI can replace.

As we look ahead, the role of multi-generational collaboration across the events sector will only become more pronounced. At The Meetings Show, we are committed to a merging of minds more than ever with a dedicated ceremony to celebrate the early career trailblazers who won Tomorrow’s Talent 2025 and encouraging students to super-charge their knowledge before they even graduate by embracing our New Gen workshops.

Shared knowledge and an open mind will and shape the future of the events industry; bridging the generational gap will be key to ensuring our industry remains relevant, resilient, and forward-thinking. True innovation happens when we embrace the strengths of all generations, valuing experience as much as fresh ideas. By doing so, we can create events that are not only successful but also inclusive, adaptive, and continuously evolving.
